Interview with Elena Matei: The Power of Staying True

When Elena Matei first set foot in New York, she never imagined her life would change within just 48 hours. Discovered on Fifth Avenue, the Moldovan-born beauty found herself catapulted into the world of high fashion — a journey that would take her from unexpected beginnings to walking runways for Tommy Hilfiger and being immortalized in Russell James’ Angels book alongside Victoria’s Secret icons. Today, Elena is more than a model; she’s a storyteller, expanding her artistry into music, where her voice and emotions take center stage. Between New York, Miami, and Europe, she continues to shape her vision of beauty, strength, and authenticity.

You were discovered on Fifth Avenue just two days after arriving in New York – how did that moment change the course of your life?

Omg, it completely changed the trajectory of my life — my dream came true! Overnight it felt like everything opened up: new people, new experiences, and a new path. I’m still thankful every day because I keep learning something new.

Coming from Moldova to the U.S., what was the biggest challenge you faced in adapting to the fashion industry?

I never thought I could model — I was discovered by accident. The biggest challenge for me was learning not to take rejection personally. You can’t tie your value to a casting; you have to keep moving and believe in yourself.

You’ve been featured in Russell James’ Angels book alongside Victoria’s Secret icons – what did that experience mean to you personally and professionally?

I love Russell! Being part of Angels was such a milestone in my career. To be featured alongside such powerful women was a huge honor, and it gave me the confidence to believe I belonged in that circle.

From walking the runway for Tommy Hilfiger to appearing in major campaigns, which career highlight stands out as most defining for you?

Every single step defines me. One highlight always leads to another — they all build on each other. I can’t separate them because together they shaped the woman and artist I’ve become.

You’re now focusing on your music album – how does your creative vision as a musician differ from your work as a model?

Modeling is about bringing someone else’s vision to life. Music is the opposite — it’s my world, my story, my emotions. I’m not just the face anymore; I’m the voice. That freedom to create from the heart is what makes music so powerful for me.

Does your background in fashion and modeling influence the way you express yourself in music?

No — my music comes from something much deeper. Fashion gave me discipline and perspective, but my songs come from lived experiences, emotions, and my soul.

Splitting your time between New York, Miami, and Europe, how do these cities shape your style and perspective?

Each city gives me something different. New York is fast and sharp — it keeps me ambitious. Miami gives me freedom and light — I can breathe there. Europe reconnects me to my roots and reminds me of authenticity and culture. Together they balance me.

Looking back on your journey so far, what have been the most important lessons you’ve learned about yourself and the industry?

The biggest lesson is to protect your soul. This industry tests you — but you can’t let it define you. Knowing who you are, saying “no” when it doesn’t feel right, and staying true to yourself are everything.
