Svitlana, you are a successful model whose face graces
the covers of fashion magazines. You play a significant role in promoting
unique beauty and culture on the international stage. At what age did you
realise you wanted to become a model, and how did this dream begin to come
true?
Thank you so much!
I really appreciate it! I suppose I was almost destined for this. My mum
enrolled me in a modelling school for children when I was 8. Since then, I’ve
taken part in runway shows, beauty pageants, and photoshoots for local brands
in Ukraine. However, my career truly began when I was 15, as that’s when I
embarked on my first international contract in Shanghai.
Now you’re
building a career in the USA and are a role model for many. How has living and
working in this country changed your perception of fashion and your overall
worldview?
What opportunities have proven most valuable, and how do you use
them for your development?
Every country I’ve
worked in has its own specific market where you either thrive or struggle, and LA is no exception. I was fortunate enough to
find clients who have been working with me for years. However, the market is
constantly evolving, and you have to adapt accordingly. Nowadays, I’m focused
on building my brand on Instagram because clients no longer want to hire just a
model—they’re interested in a public figure or influencer. So, it becomes more
of a paid collaboration. LA offers opportunities to audition for major
international brands. While nothing is guaranteed, at least you get a chance,
and for that, I’m truly grateful.
What
challenges and barriers have you had to overcome, and how has this influenced
your professional growth?
I’ve certainly
faced my share of disappointments, but I’ve learned to view them differently,
stay composed, and make the best of whatever I have. Modelling is somewhat like
a boot camp—it builds character and resilience. Overcoming these challenges has
strengthened me and helped me grow.
What
lessons and values did you bring from Ukraine, and how have they contributed to
your development in the USA? How do you view your role in promoting cultural
diversity and inclusivity in the modelling industry? What does it mean to you
to be part of this movement? What do you hope to achieve in this country that
will positively impact the local community and the fashion industry as a whole?
Do you have any ideas on improving the fashion industry and supporting emerging
talent?
Working in LA
already contributes to promoting diversity. My experience in Ukraine instilled
a strong work ethic and respect in me. I always give my best on set, regardless
of whether the client is big or small, because reputation and integrity are
everything. Being part of the fashion industry in the USA involves making a
positive contribution to the community and supporting inclusivity.
The US is
a land of vast opportunities for growth in creative industries. You are the
co-founder of the electronic music label Dark Matter in Los Angeles. What
inspired you to pursue this musical direction, and what role do you intend to
play in the development of this project?
Music has always
been a passion of mine, ever since I can remember. My musical tastes have
always been eclectic, which naturally led me to techno. “Dark Matter” is a
passion project I’m working on with my best friend, who’s also a model and DJ I
met in LA. We share a deep love for underground culture and are planning to
launch the project soon. We aim to make a statement with it, so stay tuned for
more!
